Congratulations to everyone for finishing the bicycle plan update!
The document gives us everything we need to implement a vision that
will entice San Franciscans as a whole to take 10% of their trips by
bicycle! But the plan by itself won't mean anything without our hard
work, as advocates, to build support among the MTA Board,
Supervisors, the Mayor, and our neighborhood organizations.
I know that Oliver Gajda, the project manager, spent many long hours
working on the plan when he probably would have preferred to actually
be implementing improvements to our bicycling environment. Now, he
and his colleagues there are free to focus on implementation
full-time!
Our next steps are to work with them, the, to implement the plan and
the rest of our visions. I'm looking forward to two exciting projects
now that the planning process is over. One, the development of
standards for bicycle routes -- a 'bicycle level of service' as
requested by a committee of the Transportation Authority -- will help
define what a good bicycle route is. And two, application of these
standards, conceptually at least, on the entire bicycle network in
the soon-to-be proposed "network improvement document."
Yeah for everybody!
Dave
