[Carfreeliving] Rebuilding New Orleans as an "Afro-Caribbean Paris"

Interesting. The developer, Kabacoff, got a super walmart built on prime
real estate on the natural levee and in the process removed several
thousand low income blacks. This prime urban location remained dry
during the floods. This was part of one of those Hope VI projects - very
close to downtown, excellent location. Wasted on a walmart super center
and upscale condos. A massive social justice disaster in Nola. The
displaced were of course dispersed out into the sprawl. Many were
displaced to an African American sprawl in what is called New Orleans
East, where section 8 apartment complexes were filled with former public
housing residents (completely car-oriented slums). The transit service
out in Nola East makes Muni look like Zurich. And many displaced were
carless households. This area flooded real bad, total destruction with a
cesspool of toxics now saturating the ground. Pretty shameful thing for
Kabacoff to participate in. I wish NPR would do its homework.
If Kabacoff is in control look for Disney on the Bayou, a whitewashed
image of NOLA. You will get "Paris" or "Prague" in the form of an
upscale playground. His interests have been in upscale hotels and
condos. But as it looks right now, the left is eviscerated in both
Louisiana and across the country, and Kabacoff comes out looking
"progressive" compared to the junta in control of this country. Pretty
sad state of affairs all around.
