There’s an increasingly clear way forward for San Francisco to reduce economic exclusion, diversify income-segregated neighborhoods, and expand housing opportunities, while preserving the character and livability of neighborhoods, preventing the loss and displacement of existing housing and residents, and improving access and expanding sustainable mobility in neighborhoods. San Francisco should be a leader, not a laggard, in reforming residential zoning.

A group of researchers used rigorous epidemiological methods, like those used to measure the link between cigarette smoking and disease, to understand whether excess parking creates more auto trips and more traffic congestion. They determined that "parking provision in cities is a likely cause of increased driving among residents and employees in those places." Their insights aren't exactly new, but provide further evidence that cities' 'predict and provide' approaches, including minimum parking requirements, aren't working.
